Morgantown, WV — The West Virginia University rowing team held its 39th annual Murphy Cup Regatta Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, hosted by Temple University on the Schuylkill River.
WVU’s game day started with a second team of four, which finished second out of five teams in the morning heat and went into the afternoon finals in fifth place out of six.
Next came the first team of four, which also finished second of five boats in the morning heat and advanced to the afternoon finals, where it was fourth of six.
“Given that their day-to-day roster changes the most on our team, our foursome is also doing relatively well,” the West Virginia coach said. Jimmy Kim Say. “This group is likely to have the most room for growth throughout the season, so we’ll be looking for that development in the coming weeks.”
The first team of eight struggled in the morning heat and failed to find an effective game rhythm. Going into the sprint stage of the competition, they had a chance to qualify for the B finals, but they dropped out of the competition and ended up finishing fifth.
The second eight-team won the morning heat in an intense game in which the top three finished within a second of each other. The top two of the five groups advanced to the afternoon final, where WVU placed sixth.
“The best performance today was our second eight-team,” Kim said. “They had two very solid games in their first games of the season. It’s great to see them applying the progress they’ve made in training to match day.
In the final of the foursome, the rookie eights got off to a rough start in their first game of the season, when they experienced an overhead crab early in the game that immediately put them out of contention.
“With the race weekend more competitive, today’s results should help us focus more clearly on what needs to be done next week. Let’s get started!” Kim added.
